EDEKA Future Market in Nauen, Germany

#2: Store Concept 1/2

What was the original idea for the store concept of the forthcoming EDEKA Future Market in Nauen?

Verena Zirwes
Client Service Director Interstore:

The high standard of sustainability was a basic requirement for the creation of the store concept and runs like a common thread through the entire project. With the premise of being as sustainable as possible, we at Interstore and Schweitzer have created a flexible store space that gives the retailer plenty of room for manoeuvre. Short-term flexibility to test seasonality and new product ranges; long-term flexibility to be able to make changes to the layout and product range over time.

Part of the store concept developed by Interstore is to turn the shop space into a meeting place where people can interact. What activities are you planning in future to attract customers to the store outside of weekend shopping?

Christian Dorfmann
Managing Director EDEKA Future Market in Nauen:

Promotions outside of the traditional product range will also play a special role in the store. For example, we are planning tastings and other events in the gallery of the EDEKA Future Market, from where customers will not only be able to enjoy their coffee and other offers but will also have an extraordinary view of the market.

What do you associate with the slogan "Future is..." and how is this claim being realized in the new market?

Christian Dorfmann
Managing Director EDEKA Future Market in Nauen:
The all-encompassing basic claim of the future market is to be as sustainable as possible: from architecture to shop fitting and store design as well as the actual day-to-day work. For me, sustainability in this case means, among other things, reducing or doing without what is unnecessary. This approach can be found throughout the entire market. For example, it was very important to us in this respect that our products travel as few transport kilometres as possible to get to us. Fruit and vegetables from local farmers and meat from regional, animal-friendly farms are a matter of course for us.

Ben Balon
Engineer EDEKA Minden-Hannover:
Right from the start, we scrutinized all components and asked ourselves where we could make reductions. That's why we now have a coated floor panel without tiling and without screed. All wooden surfaces are varnished but without any additional treatment with toxic coatings. All surfaces therefore remain largely in their natural state and are used are used throughout the entire area. There is no sun screening and fewer supports in the architecture.
